I intend to remind you about how the plans for an American empire were made long before the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon took place and instead of just citing where you can find the information I'm including it in my article.

When Reagan coined the phrase "evil empire," he was referring to the USSR, & I basically agreed with him that the USSR needed to be contained & checkmated. But today it is the US that is widely perceived as an evil empire, & world forces are gathering to stop us.

Our invasion and occupation are illegal, being in violation of both international law and our own traditions. We were lied into war. We are still being lied to. We need to get out of Iraq right now. This folly has already cost us 3,300 American lives, $500 billion in tax money, 30,000 wounded...

Terrorism, our government constantly reminds us, is the scourge of our times. So why is a man described by our government as "an unrepentant criminal and admitted mastermind of terrorist plots and attacks on tourist sites" looking forward to a hero's welcome in Miami from his old Bay of Pigs comrades?

You walk up toward the big brick penitentiary, through the guard towers and the shotguns and rifles. And you know that none of it has to do with right and wrong. It has to do with we are bigger than you and we don't care about thou shall not kill and we will kill you if you get out of line and run toward home and your son and your wife.

Being hated is no fun. Few of us are like those pantomime villains who glory in the hisses and boos of an audience. And few people hate being hated more than Americans. I wish I had a dollar for every time I've been asked the plaintive question: "Why do they hate us?"

Anyone who wants to write about the constitutional crisis unfolding in the United States today faces a peculiar problem at the outset. There is a large body of observations that at one and the same time have been made too often and yet not often enough - too often because they have been repeated to the point of tedium for a minority ready to listen
